Seeing a psychiatrist is a medical step, not a weakness
Most people wait far too long. They put up with weeks of poor sleep, constant worry, low mood or thoughts they cannot switch off, and they tell themselves it will pass. Families often wait even longer, because they are unsure whether what they are seeing is stress, a phase or something that needs a doctor.
A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who has trained in mental health. That matters. A psychiatrist can examine whether a physical illness is behind your symptoms, make a diagnosis, prescribe medicine when it is needed and work alongside a therapist on the rest of your care. This page explains what the first visit involves, which conditions we treat and how to choose the right psychiatrist, whether that is us or someone else.
If you want to talk to someone today, Talk to our admissions team on WhatsApp. Your message is confidential.
What a psychiatrist does
A psychiatrist assesses how you think, feel and behave, and decides whether you have a mental health condition and how serious it is. After the assessment, the psychiatrist can:
- Make or confirm a diagnosis
- Prescribe and adjust medicine, and explain what it does and what side effects to watch for
- Check for medical causes such as thyroid problems, vitamin deficiencies, sleep disorders or the effects of other medicines
- Recommend therapy and refer you to a clinical psychologist when that will help
- Judge whether outpatient care is enough or whether you need a stay in a hospital or clinic
Conditions we assess and treat
Dr. Obaid Ullah Khan and the FCRC clinical team see adults for:
- Depression, including long term low mood, loss of interest and High Functioning Depression.
- Anxiety, panic attacks and social anxiety.
- Bipolar disorder.
- Schizophrenia and other psychotic conditions.
- OCD, including religious and contamination fears
- Sleep problems and Sleeping Pill Dependency
- Addiction together with a mental health condition, known as Dual Diagnosis
- Stress, burnout and the point where life stops feeling manageable.
If your concern is not on this list, send us a message. We will tell you honestly whether we can help or who is better placed to.
Signs it is time to see a psychiatrist
You do not need to be in crisis to book. Consider an appointment if:
- Low mood, worry or irritability has lasted more than two weeks and is affecting work, studies or family life
- You are sleeping far too little or far too much
- You have panic attacks, or fear of the next one stops you from going out
- You hear or see things others do not, or have beliefs others find hard to understand
- You are relying on tablets, alcohol or other substances to cope
- You have been prescribed medicine and are not sure it is working or whether you should stop it
- Someone close to you has told you that you have changed
If you or someone near you is in immediate danger or is thinking of self harm, go to the nearest emergency department now or call a trusted person to take you there. Do not wait for an appointment.
how we work ?
What happens at your first appointment
We want the first visit to feel calm and clear.
Private conversation
You meet the psychiatrist alone, or with a family member if you prefer. You talk about what is happening, how long it has lasted and what has been tried so far.
Clinical assessment
The psychiatrist asks about sleep, appetite, energy, mood, thoughts, physical health, family history and any medicine or substances you use. Bring your prescriptions and any previous reports.
Diagnosis and explanation
You hear what the psychiatrist thinks is going on, in plain language, and you can ask questions. No diagnosis is given without a proper assessment.
Treatment plan
The plan may include medicine, therapy, lifestyle changes, tests or a mix. The psychiatrist explains the benefits and risks of each option so that the decision is shared.
Follow up
Medicine often needs adjusting. We arrange follow up visits and tell you what to watch for between them.
Stepping up care when needed
If outpatient visits are not enough, we can discuss admission to our residential program. Our Inpatient Rehab Program and Outpatient Rehab Program pages explain the difference.
Medicine: what to expect
Psychiatric medicine works best when it is prescribed after a full assessment and reviewed regularly. Please keep these points in mind:
- Do not start, stop or change a psychiatric medicine on your own. Stopping suddenly can cause withdrawal symptoms or bring the illness back.
- Many medicines take weeks to work, so early doubts are normal. Tell your psychiatrist rather than stopping.
- Some tablets that are sold for anxiety and sleep can cause dependence.
- Tell your psychiatrist about every medicine, herbal product and substance you use.
Therapy alongside psychiatric care
For many conditions, medicine alone is not the whole answer. Our psychologists offer Counseling and Therapy, including CBT, and our Family Support Program helps relatives understand the illness and support recovery. Abrar Ahmad, Consultant Clinical Psychologist and Addiction Therapist, leads the psychosocial side of care.
Privacy and respect
Mental health still carries stigma in Pakistan. Your visit is confidential. Information is shared with your family only with your agreement, except where there is a serious risk to safety. Many people also prefer to come from outside Islamabad and Rawalpindi because it keeps their care private, and our location in Bani Gala is quiet and away from busy hospital areas. آپ کی معلومات مکمل رازداری کے ساتھ محفوظ رہتی ہیں۔
What affects the cost of care
We do not publish a fixed fee on this page because it depends on what you need. These factors usually decide it:
- Whether it is a first assessment or a follow up visit
- Whether tests are needed
- How many follow up visits and therapy sessions are recommended
- Whether outpatient care is enough or admission is needed
Message us on WhatsApp and the admissions team will explain the cost clearly before you book.
How to choose a psychiatrist
Whether you choose FCRC or not, check these points:
- Qualifications. Ask for the psychiatrist’s qualification and registration. Registration can be checked with the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council. Consultant psychiatrists in Pakistan typically hold an FCPS or equivalent.
- Time. A proper first assessment takes time. Be cautious of a five minute visit that ends in a prescription.
- Explanation. A good psychiatrist explains the diagnosis, the medicine and the risks, and welcomes questions.
- A plan for follow up. Medicine needs review. Ask what happens after the first visit.
- Honest about limits. A good psychiatrist refers you on when someone else is better placed.
- Privacy. Ask how your records are kept and who can see them.

frequently asked question
Who is the best psychiatrist in Islamabad?
No one can honestly name a single best psychiatrist for every person. The right one is qualified, registered, takes time to listen and explains the plan. Use the checklist above and ask questions at the first visit.
Do I need a referral to see a psychiatrist?
No. You can book directly. Bring any previous reports and a list of the medicines you take.
How long does the first appointment take?
A proper first assessment is longer than a routine follow up. Ask the admissions team for the expected time when you book.
Will I be given medicine at the first visit?
Not always. Some people start medicine after the first assessment, some need tests first and some begin with therapy. The psychiatrist explains the reasons.
Can I come with a family member?
Yes. You can be seen alone, with a family member or both, depending on what you prefer.
Can a psychiatrist treat addiction?
es. Addiction often goes together with depression, anxiety or other conditions. We treat them together under one plan. See our Dual Diagnosis Treatment page.
Is everything I say confidential?
Yes. We share information with your family only with your agreement, except where there is a serious risk to safety.
Do you offer online consultations?
Ask our admissions team on WhatsApp. Some follow up visits can be done online, but we may need to see you in person for the first assessment.
What is the difference between a psychiatrist and a psychologist?
A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who can diagnose and prescribe medicine. A psychologist provides therapy. Many people benefit from both.
What if I am not sure I need a psychiatrist?
You can take our Free Mental Health Self Check, which uses the PHQ-9 and GAD-7 questionnaires. It does not give a diagnosis, but it can help you decide whether to book a visit.
